The Beginning

We planted our first neem trees in 1992 as organic gardeners committed to using least-toxic methods of pest control. Today, we have more than 350 acres of organic neem trees and aloe vera growing in the Yucatan Peninsula. We also have planted nopal, chaya and other medicinal herbs that thrive in a dry tropical climate where sustainable agriculture is vital to both the environmental and economic health of the region.

How we grow neem

In their native India, neem trees thrive in the front yards of many homes where they are worshipped for their cooling shade as well as their medicinal value. The tropical climate of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula allows us to grow neem and aloe in close proximity to facilities that can manufacture our lotions, creams and tinctures within hours of harvest so they retain the highest possible medicinal quality.

When we first began an organic farm in the Yucatan, our neighbors called us "communists" because we didn't use chemical fertilizers. After observing our techniques, they are now very proud of our success in introducing the concepts of sustainable agriculture and viable reforestation to their region.

Our 350-acre farm employs more than 20 native Mayan workers year-round. They selectively prune our organic neem trees, quickly packing green leaves for immediate production. They also hand-select neem leaves which have been dried in an air-conditioned storage facility for color and quality for our neem leaf capsules.

Neem seedlings are grown in a special nursery area for one year until rainy season, when they can be planted in fields with aloe vera plants. Both grow well in our limestone and clay soil because we carefully use sustainable organic techniques. Legumes have been planted to fix nitrogen in the soil and we have discovered that tropical sheep thrive on the weeds that compete with neem and aloe for sun, water and nutrients. The sheep have another advantage: they spread their own organic fertilizer for us throughout the farm during the day. At night, they are corralled for protection from predators and we are able to collect more fertilizer for our nursery plants.
